You know that feeling you get when you put on a really special item of clothing?
Maybe it’s an expensive jacket, tailored to fit your proportions perfectly. Perhaps it’s a simple white t-shirt that hangs just right. Or possibly it’s a pair of shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful.
When we feel great in our clothes, we look great. It has a positive effect on our mood, confidence levels and attitude. Yet all too often we settle for wearing things that don’t evoke any sort of pleasure when we have them on.
Over the past five years I have seen inside the wardrobes of many women who are struggling to dress in a way that feels right for them. A lot of them have items that they don’t feel good in or that don’t fit them properly, yet they still keep hold of them and wear them on a regular basis. Often they feel in some way obligated to wear them, usually due to the money that has been spent on them, but my question is always…’why would you wear something that you don’t feel fabulous in? Would you eat something that you don’t like the taste of? No! So why wear clothes you don’t like the look of?’
The answer is usually ‘I don’t know’ and often, the reason they continue to wear them is because they don’t know what else to wear – they don’t have a true sense of their personal style and how to dress authentically to reflect who they are.
When we start to think about clothes as a way of expressing our personality, rather than just as something to simply cover our bodies with, then shopping for clothes and getting dressed each day takes on a whole new meaning.
As a personal stylist I spend time with women helping them understand which colours complement and flatter them, which clothing styles and fabrics suit their body shape and how to combine these things to put together outfits that truly suit them (and make them feel fabulous!)
Most importantly though, I help them explore their style personality and how to express who they are through their clothes, it’s this that is the key to looking and feeling great in what we wear.
So next time you get dressed, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself: ‘Does this outfit express who I am as a person?’ ‘Do I feel fabulous?’
If the answer to either of these questions is ’no’ then its time to address how you dress!
You deserve to look and feel AMAZING, every single day and should settle for nothing less. This is what I aim to achieve with every client I see – for them to, over time, have a wardrobe of clothes that expresses who they are, that flatters them and makes them look and feel gorgeous!
The best part? You don’t have to have a huge budget to achieve this, once you know what you want to say about yourself with your clothes and what suits you, the rest just falls into place. And if you’re not sure where to start, well, that’s where I come in…!
